Learn how to add an e-mail account you’ve created in cPanel to your iOS device.

Starting to Add your E-mail Account to iOS

If you already have your e-mail account set up in Apple Mail on your Macintosh, you may not even need to set it up on your iOS device. If you’ve turned on e-mail synching in the iCloud preferences on your Mac and iOS device all accounts set up on your Mac will automatically be copied over to your iOS device.

If you don’t use Apple Mail or iCloud to synch your accounts, then you can manually add your account directly on your iOS device.

The directions here will show how to handle adding an e-mail account on iOS 8. Other versions of iOS may vary slightly, though in most cases the changes are not significant.

The first step is to tap on the Settings icon on your iOS device home screen.

Mail, Contacts, Calendars

Swipe down the main Settings screen until you find Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Tap on it.

Add Account

Next, look for the Add Account item and tap on that.

Select the Type of Account

On this screen, select Other as the type of account.

Add Mail Account

Now tap on Add Mail Account under the Mail header.

Start Entering your E-mail Account Details

On this screen, there are several things that must be filled out:

  1. Type in the name you want to appear in the FROM: line in e-mails into the Name field (it may contain spaces).
  2. Enter the full e-mail address of the account you set up into the Email field.
  3. Type in the password you specified when you created your account in cPanel into the Password field.
  4. The Description field allows you to display a "friendly" name to remind you what e-mail account this is. The text in this field is not sent to anyone, it is just used as a placeholder or reminder for you in iOS.

Continue Mail Account Setup

Now you will need to specify some required information in order to set up your e-mail account. Note that some of this information may already be filled in. If it is, just verify it before moving on.

  1. Choose the protocol you want to use when fetching mail to your iOS device. IMAP manages all mail on the server itself (storing all of your information on your hosting server). This will be the best choice for most accounts.
  2. POP is an older protocol that normally downloads all mail from the mail server and stores all of it on the local device or computer. On iOS devices, mail accessed using POP is not permanently removed from the server unless you delete it (and after a specified amount of time has passed). Mail sent to other people using your POP configured e-mail account may not appear on your mail server (it will only be stored locally on your iOS device – If you want, it is possible to set iOS to BCC: your e-mail account on all messages that you send (so this way you will have a copy of the sent message stored in your inbox for your records.
  3. Verify the name you entered in the Name field appears exactly as you want it. Other people will see this when you send mail to them.
  4. Verify that the full e-mail account listed in the Email field is correct.
  5. Verify that the Description field contains the name of this account as you want it to appear in iOS. Other users will not see this (unless they have access to your iOS device, of course).

Incoming Mail Server

Swipe down the screen slightly to reveal the Incoming Mail Server section. This is where you will specify your mail server’s connection details:

  1. In the Host Name field type the full server hostname of the server that you are located on (typically found in the welcome e-mail you were sent when you signed up with us). If you don’t know this, you can enter "mail.domain.com" where "domain.com" is your hosted domain name. Please note that if you use something other than the server hostname then you may receive a warning when iOS attempts to connect securely to this domain to fetch mail. It may tell you that the certificate does not match. This is OK, you can choose to continue the connection even if you do see that the first time you connect.
  2. The User Name field should connect your full e-mail address.
  3. The Password should be the password you specified when you set up your e-mail account in cPanel.

Outgoing Mail Server

Swipe down the screen a bit more and you will see the Outgoing Mail Server section. This should contain exactly the same information as the Incoming Mail Server section above.

  1. In the Host Name field type the full server hostname of the server that you are located on (typically found in the welcome e-mail you were sent when you signed up with us). If you don’t know this, you can enter "mail.domain.com" where "domain.com" is your hosted domain name. Please note that if you use something other than the server hostname then you may receive a warning when iOS attempts to connect securely to this domain to send mail. It may tell you that the certificate does not match. This is OK, you can choose to continue the connection even if you do see that the first time you connect.
  2. The User Name field should connect your full e-mail address.
  3. The Password should be the password you specified when you set up your e-mail account in cPanel.

When done here, tap the Next button at the top of this screen on your iOS device. It will run a quick check on your settings and let you know if it thinks any settings are wrong. If all goes well you will see green checkmarks appear next to most lines on the screen and then it will move on to the final mail account setup screen. If you get an error, check the details you’ve entered to make sure they are correct. If you continue to have problems and you have hosting with us (and we hope that you do), please contact our 24/7 support for assistance.

Finishing Up

The last step is to tell iOS if you want to use this account to show mail and/or notes.

  1. Mail should remain active (the toggle should be green). This will make sure your mail from this account appears on your iOS device when you check for mail.
  2. Note can be turned off (the toggle should be white). This will not display iOS or Apple Mail notes inside this account in the Mail app on iOS.
  3. If everything is the way you want it, tap Save to complete the setup.

Now you should be able to navigate to the Mail app on your iOS device and check and send mail to and from your newly set up e-mail account. If you have iCloud E-mail sync enabled, you will be able to access this same account on all of your iOS or Mac OS X devices where iCloud E-mail sync is also enabled without having to set it up again.
